Why is there such magic in a flickering flame? Perhaps our brains recognize fire as primal, elemental … crucial for survival. Maybe it reminds us of dimly lit evenings with a special someone in some far-off place. As you enter Stovehouse’s “Gas Light Alley,” you sense that warm, mysterious feeling. From the cobblestone-style path to the gleaming gas lanterns and whimsical lights flanking your way, the boutique shopping alley literally glows with nostalgia and old-world charm.

The quaint alley stretches the entirety of Stovehouse, from east to west. In fact, it used to be a back alley between 3rd and 4th Avenue before the previous property owners built a factory extension right over it. This was the home of Martin Stove beginning in the 1930s.

Now, this spot would’ve been decidedly grittier before it was revived for revelry, for strolling, shopping, and dining on the Stovehouse campus. The premium coffee now served here by Charlie Foster’s would’ve come flat-black and used for the sole purpose of plowing through long hours building gas-powered heaters for homes in Huntsville and beyond.

And so it is, that “Gas Light Alley” is now a leisure destination and a tip-of-the-hat to the hard work that happened here … to the labor that warmed families and provided a good wage to keep home fires burning.
