Barley and similar crops often aren’t naturally suited to Alabama’s climate and soil. Researchers from HudsonAlpha, in collaboration with experts, have used genomics and plant breeding to develop new, improved agricultural crops for our region. This initiative helps local farmers grow barley during their “off-season,” providing them with additional income and reducing the need to import barley from other parts of the U.S.
30,000 pounds of barley were harvested from an eight-acre field trial in North Alabama, now being used by over a dozen breweries in the state.
